Surgical Services for Dogs & Cats
Bringing your dog or cat in for surgery can be a stressful experience for both you and your pet. Please be assured that our veterinarians will only recommend surgery when they feel it is absolutely necessary for your pet's overall health and well being.
We hope to assuage your concerns by making sure you are fully informed about what to expect from your pet's surgery. We will make sure you have the information you need to prepare your cat or dog for surgery ahead of time, and will also ensure you know exactly what will happen during the procedure. While your pet is in our care, we will treat them with the same compassion and kindness as if they were our own.
When the procedure is complete, we will give you a detailed guide on how to care for your pet at home as they heal.
The team at Glendale Veterinary Hospital can perform a wide range of surgical procedures designed to restore your pet's health and comfort.
Surgical Procedures
At Glendale Veterinary Hospital, our veterinarians perform routine and emergency surgeries to help treat disease and conditions in pets or to repair injuries obtained through trauma.
If our veterinarians cannot perform a required surgery themselves, they will refer to a specialist.
Below are some of the surgeries performed at Glendale Veterinary Hospital:
-
Soft Tissue Surgery
The term "soft tissue surgery" covers a range of ear, nose, and throat procedures as well as mass removal and treatment of flesh wounds. Soft tissue surgery also includes procedures for hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and skin disorders.
Almost all surgical procedures not covered under the heading of orthopedic surgery can be considered soft tissue surgery.
-
Spaying & Neutering
Spaying and neutering are commonly performed surgical procedures. Spay and neuter surgeries sterilize pets, which will prevent unwanted pregnancies, diseases and can curb unwanted behaviors.
-
C-Sections
Cesarean sections, often shortened to "c-sections", are performed to surgically remove puppies or kittens from their mother's uterus when she is unable to pass them through the birth canal naturally.
-
Ocular Surgery
Ocular surgery is performed to treat eye conditions in dogs and cats. Common ocular surgeries include eyelid tumour removal, ectropion surgery, entropion surgery, enucleation of the eye, and cherry eye surgery.
-
Wound Repair
When living tissue has been cut or otherwise damaged, wound repair surgery may be necessary. It is important that these wounds are cleaned, disinfected, and appropriately cared for by a qualified veterinarian as soon as possible in order to prevent infection from setting in and other complications.
-
Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgeries are designed to correct injuries and conditions of the bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, and other skeletal structures in your pet. Common veterinary orthopedic surgeries include TPLO and FHO.
For cats and dogs that require TPLO surgery, we utilize a board-certified surgeon who can perform the procedure in our hospital.
-
Dental Surgery
Our veterinarians can perform dental surgeries to relieve pain and restore good oral health to dogs and cats. These surgeries range from gum disease treatment to tooth extractions and oral mass removals.
The Surgery Process
Prior to any surgical procedure, our veterinarians will complete a thorough assessment of your pet's health to ensure that general anesthesia will be safe for them. This may include a physical exam and diagnostic testing such as blood tests including additional testing for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency viruses in cats.
While your dog or cat is in surgery, there will be a veterinary technician dedicated to administering your pet's anesthesia and monitoring their vital signs.
Following the procedure, post-operative monitoring and pain management will take place, and your veterinarian will give you thorough instructions for at-home care during recovery.
Sterilization Protocols
Our clinic utilizes dedicated surgical suites which are kept completely sterile to prevent infection and cross-contamination.
Additionally, our staff wear sterile attire at all times when they are in the surgical suite, and carefully clean, sterilize, and wrap all surgical instruments and equipment prior to every surgery.
