Veterinary Lab & Diagnostics
Diagnostic Technology
The technology we have available at our in-house lab helps us to accurately and efficiently diagnose the cause of your dog or cat's symptoms, and then form a treatment plan accordingly.
By using tools such as X-rays, ultrasounds, EKGs, urinalysis, complete blood cell counts, and serum biochemistry, we can detect early signs of medical conditions that may just be coming up and begin treatment while they are most treatable.
Additionally, our clinic in Caledon utilizes cold laser therapy to improve healing and provide some pain relief for patients.
Our Diagnostic Services
At Glendale Veterinary Hospital, our in-house lab is equipped with the following technology to help us diagnose your pet's condition and treat them in a timely manner:
- Radiography (Digital X-rays)
Safe, painless, and non-invasive, digital radiography uses a very low dose of radiation to capture images that can be used to evaluate bones and organs. The dose of radiation used in digital X-rays is so low it's even safe for pregnant pets.
From these images, our veterinarians can diagnose conditions such as broken bones, chronic arthritis, bladder stones, spinal cord diseases, and some tumours.
- Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. These images are captured in real time, so our veterinarians can see the structure and movement of a cat or dog's internal organs and blood flowing through their blood vessels.
- ECG / EKG
An electrocardiogram (ECG / EKG) uses little electrodes that are stuck to the skin with sticky plastic patches to measure the electrical activity of a heart. This test can show how a heart is functioning, and can detect any irregularities.
If your veterinarian suspects your cat or dog may have a heart disorder, they will usually recommend performing chest X-rays, and an ECG / EKG.
- Complete Blood Cell Count or CBC
The complete blood count, commonly called a CBC, is a routine blood test that is used in all stages of health and illness. It is a simple test that gives information about the different cell types in the blood and can indicate the presence of many types of disease. Most blood cells come from bone marrow, so the CBC can also be used indirectly to assess bone marrow health.
- Serum Biochemistry
Serum biochemistry refers to the chemical analysis of serum. There are many substances in the serum, including proteins, enzymes, lipids, and hormones. Testing for these various substances provides information about the body’s organs and tissues, as well as the metabolic state of the pet. If a test result is abnormal, it may indicate that disease is present. Further assessment of the test results may offer clues about which organ system is affected and the nature and severity of the disorder.
- Cold Lasers
Cold laser therapy uses low-intensity laser or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help relieve pain, reduce swelling and inflammation, stimulate and enhance cell function, and speed up healing.
- Urinalysis
Urinalysis is the study of your cat or dog's urine. By looking at your pet's urine sample, our veterinarians will assess the health of their kidney's and urinary system. Urinalysis can also help our veterinarians find issues in other organs, and is important for diagnosing metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
