Veterinary Internal Medicine
Diagnosing & Treating Internal Conditions In Pets
Veterinary internal medicine helps treat health conditions that impact the health of your pet's internal systems.
More specifically, it involves diagnosing and treating internal medical conditions such as neurological disorders, heart disease, kidney failure, and cancer.
If it is suspected that your pet has developed a condition in one of their internal systems, usually because they are exhibiting systems, our team will perform an examination, X-ray, and ultrasound using the equipment available in our on-site lab.
Once your pet's condition has been diagnosed, we will share our findings with you and begin treatment as soon as possible.
Internal Medicine at Glendale Veterinary Hospital
If your pet is exhibiting symptoms of an internal condition, your veterinarian will conduct a comprehensive physical exam and additional testing to diagnose the issue and create a customized treatment plan.
Common areas of focus include:
-
Cardiology (heart-related disorders)
Like people, dogs and cats can suffer from a range of heart diseases and disorders. With the technology we have available in our in-house lab, our veterinarians can take a look at how your pet's heart is functioning, look for signs of heart disease, and provide you with a diagnosis of their condition and a customized treatment plan.
-
Reproductive Issues
A great way to avoid certain issues with your dog or cat's reproductive system is to have them spayed or neutered when they are young before any reproductive issues can arise.
However, if you've chosen to breed your pet, we can provide support, guidance, and medical care in the process. At Glendale Veterinary Hospital, we know the financial investment and personal commitment to properly breeding pets. If your pet is experiencing issues with their reproductive system, our team can work to diagnose the issue and offer appropriate treatment options to help resolve them.
-
Immunology (immune system disorders)
The immune system is responsible for detecting foreign invaders or abnormal cells and beginning defensive action to protect the health of your pet. However, the immune system doesn't always work as it should, leading to immune-mediated disorders.
Anemia, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism, allergies, and skin diseases are some of the most common immune-mediated disorders seen in dogs and cats.
-
Pulmonary Disorders (diseases of the lungs)
Your pet's respiratory system is responsible for delivering oxygen to their lungs and eliminating waste gases such as carbon dioxide.
Since dogs and cats are unable to sweat the way people do, your pet's respiratory system is also essential for regulating their body temperature.
In dogs, common pulmonary disorders include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), canine distemper virus, pneumonia, and lung tumours.
In cats, asthma, bronchitis, parasitic worms, bacterial infections, and viruses are some of the most common pulmonary issues our veterinarians see.
-
Gastroenterology (digestive organs)
Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are conditions that affect a cat or dog's stomach and intestines, interfering with their ability to digest food properly and absorb nutrients.
If a pet is experiencing a GI problem, you may notice symptoms such as blood in their stool, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, gas, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
-
Oncology (tumours and cancer)
Sadly, cancer is a common disease in pets. However, if diagnosed in the earliest stages, many cancers in dogs and cats can be treated with a combination of therapies, surgeries and other methods.
In dogs, commonly seen cancers include mast cell tumours, melanoma, lymphoma, and bone cancer.
Lymphoma, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), mammary cancer and skin cancer are common in cats.
-
Urology (urinary functions, genitourinary tract)
The urinary tract consists of the ureters, which are the tubes that carry urine to the bladder, and the urethra that conducts urine out of the body. Urinary tract disorders in pets are common and can affect any part of this system.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs and feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) in cats are also common urinary conditions.
-
Endocrinology (glands and their functions)
Your pet's endocrine system consists of a number of glands and the essential hormones secreted by those glands. When a dog or cat's endocrine system isn't working correctly, symptoms such as skin problems and poor coat condition can become evident.
-
Neurology (brain and nervous system disorders)
Veterinary neurology is a branch of internal medicine that covers conditions of the brain and spinal cord as well as neuromuscular dysfunction.
Common neurological disorders our veterinarians see in dogs and cats include seizures, IVDD, and tumours.
Cancer Diagnosis & Care
Unfortunately, a common internal medical condition found in dogs and cats is cancer. When detected early, many cancers can be treated with a combination of therapies and surgeries that are designed to help improve and extend your pet's quality of life.
If your pet is diagnosed with cancer, we will explain the severity of their condition to you, discuss any additional diagnostic testing we feel may be necessary, and provide you with treatment options and prognosis.
Our team at Glendale Veterinary Hospital are dedicated to giving cats and dogs with cancer the care that they need, while also providing support for the human families that love them.
In-House Lab & Diagnostics
Our in-house veterinary lab is equipped with diagnostic imaging technologies and other equipment that allows our team to diagnose your pet's condition as quickly as possible so that treatment can begin right away. With most conditions, early intervention means a more positive outcome.
