Spaying & Neutering
Getting Your Pet Spayed or Neutered
Making the decision to get your cat or dog spayed or neutered can be stressful for many pet parents. While you may understand that the procedure is considered routine, the idea of your beloved four-legged friend going in for surgery and receiving general anesthesia can be scary.
Our team at Glendale Veterinary Hospital wants you to know how important it is to have your dog or cat spayed or neutered. Not only can will the procedure prevent unwanted litters, but it can also stop your furry friend from developing serious reproductive issues and even some cancers.
Additionally, spaying and neutering your pet can help curb undesirable behaviours, such as spraying, wandering and aggression.
While there are risks, these surgeries are common, and they help your cat or dog to live a healthier, more content life.
Benefits of Microchipping Your Pets
At Glendale Veterinary Hospital, we offer microchipping as a quick, simple, and permanent way to identify your dog or cat if they ever go missing.
Microchipping significantly improves the likelihood of reuniting with your pet if they ever get lost, giving you peace of mind and added security.
When to Spay or Neuter Your Pet
Your veterinarian is the person who understands your pet's health best. Below, we provide general spay and neuter age guidelines, we recommend waiting until five to six months old.
Cats: Kittens can be spayed when they are as young as six to eight weeks old, however, the standard spay or neuter procedure is often not performed until a kitten is more like five or six months old. A healthy adult cat of any age can also be spayed or neutered.
Dogs: Dogs can be spayed or neutered around six months of age. The ideal age differs between breeds, environment, and temperament. This will be discussed during the puppy wellness visits as there are multiple factors to consider.

How long will it take for my pet to recover from surgery?
Spay and neuter procedures are typically day surgeries, allowing pets to go home after they wake up from the general anesthesia.
Your pet's activity will need to be restricted for approximately 10 days, and a protective collar may need to be worn to prevent them from licking their incision.
Your vet may also request that you bring your pet in for a follow-up appointment a few weeks after the surgery has been performed.
-
Will my pet feel anything during the procedure?
No, your pet will be under general anesthesia, and will not feel anything during the procedure.
-
Will my pet gain weight after the procedure?
Your puppy or kitten will continue to grow to their full adult weight after the spay or neuter procedure, and this naturally includes some weight gain.
However, your pet will not gain weight as a result of being spayed or neutered.
-
How much will it cost to get my pet fixed?
The cost of your pet's spay or neuter surgery depends on a wide variety of factors, including the size of your pet and their overall health, as well as where you live in the country.
